Cet émouvant et célébrissime lamento, « E la Solita storia del pastore », que chante Frederico au 2^ème acte de L’Arlesiana, opéra en trios actes de Francesco Ciléa, créé en 1897 au Teatro Lirico de Milan, figure au programme de pratiquement tous les récitals de Mario Lanza qui l’enregistra deux fois.

Une première fois aux Studios Warner Bros pour la bande-son du film Serenade le 13 juillet 1955, d’une seule prise et en même temps que trois autres arias : Amor ti vieta (Fedora), Qual occhi al mondo (Tosca) et Ci lasciaremo all stagion fiori (La Bohème).

L’orchestre était dirigé par le maestro Ray Heindorf.

Le second enregistrement de cet aria, sublimement interprété avec une exceptionnelle et intense passion, a eu lieu à Londres lors du récital de Mario Lanza au Royal Albert Hall, le 16 janvier 1958, accompagné au piano par Constantine Callinicos.
