I find it quite hard to admit, as a literature student, that poetry has never really spoken to me on an emotional level.
Whether it’s Keats, Byron, or even Shakespeare, poetry always feels to me like the most elite and inaccessible aspect of literature. It is very rare that good poetry captures the lives of the modern-day ‘common man’ and it is even rarer that they can capture the Northern experience.

But one poet that completely reverses this inaccessibility, and makes poetry speak to me, is Tony Harrison. This article will look at Harrison’s most famous poem, “v.”, but it will also look at my favourite Harrison poem “Allotments”.
