          He's caught acting bug

          Like lots of 14-year-olds, William Yelton sat through a history lesson on the 1770 Boston Massacre.

          Unlike most 14-year-olds, he could tell his teacher that he'd actually been there.

          "He was like, 'W-h-a-a-a-t?'" the Roland-Grise eighth-grader recalled, chuckling.

          The son of Larry and Sherri Yelton of Wilmington, he's graduated from community theater to small roles in the locally filmed TV series Surface and One Tree Hill to a part in John Adams, the miniseries premiering at 8 tonight on HBO.

          Credited as "William Smith Yelton," he plays Sam Maverick, a 17-year-old apprentice, who was the youngest of five civilians killed in a showdown between Boston tax protesters and British soldiers on the night of March 5, 1770.

          His big scene was filmed in January 2007 (with a reshoot two months later), on a farm outside Richmond, Va.
